I take Methotrexate on a Saturday evening. I always find I am tired the next day. I used to take it in the morning but I found the sun used to affect me, I work doing supply in schools and tend to be outside from time to time. I checked with the doctor and he said evenings would be fine. Does anyone else find it makes them tired the day after. Thanks Lorna x

Hi Lorna Methotrexate is known for causing side effects the day after it is taken. I'm generally tired anyway so I'm not sure whether I can blame the mtx but having been off it for a few weeks I do feel a lot more awake! The best thing to do is experiment and see if a change makes a difference. As long as the full dosage is taken it can be split; you could say take half at bedtime and the remainder next morning, or, half in the morning and the other half at night. It might help cut down the unwanted side effects. Whilst taking mtx you may become photosensitive and it is advisable to avoid sun exposure whenever possible. It's also essential that you use a high factor sun cream when outside to avoid possible problems. This should really have been explained to you when you were prescribed the drug. There is quite a bit of information on the forum about sun sensitivity; a search should highlight the appropriate topics. Hope you find a solution Lorna, Lyn x

Hi Lorna- I also feel wiped out after the MTX. I now take mine at lunch time (25mg) and conk out about 8.30pm - I then feel I'm over the worst of the tiredness by the next morning. We all do different things but I find this easiest to avoid being mega tired at work.

Hi Lorna,
I take my mtx on a Monday evening and yes, I am usually more tired on a Tuesday, mtx is well known for the tiredness the day after taking it. Perhaps if you take it on Friday evening it will give you the weekend to recover, ready for work on Monday? Hope you can find a solution.

Hi Lorna, I take mine on a Thursday tea time and usually sleep well Thursday night! Fridays are usually see how I feel day and as I dont work Fridays its quite useful. I was advised to take it evening time and then sleep so that the effects were going on in your body whilst asleep. Tiredness is such a big part of this thing we all have and I think half our problem is learning to respect it and allow ourselves to rest. As women (not being sexist at all just speaking from a womens point of view!) we beat ourselves up if we dont have everything done, ie washing, ironing, shopping etc and the huge learning curve with RA is that we have to let some things go.
Hope all goes well for you,
lots of love Heatherxxx

Hi Christine, You deserve a gold star, I do keep busy but when the tiredness hits me I rest. Got up today and have been really busy and now I am going in the garden to plant my pansies I've had them a few days and they wont plant themselves ha ha. No I dont let it get me down, if I am tired I lie down to it. I make up for it when I feel better. I rally round my daughters and we have a cleaning and tidy up time. I sleep really well so I think thats why I keep so well. Long may I feel the way I do now. Lorna x

Hi there, I take Methotrexate on a Monday, early evening, and I am completely wiped out the next day, completely exhausted, My family are grown up so there is just hubby and me I dont know what I would do if I had a family to look after. I have mentioned it to my Rheumy, pharmacist and he said this does affect some people, but I am lucky, some people feel exhausted for days after MTX!, so that is me told!

Just to say sometimes it's not the Methotrexate that is too blame but simply the fatigue caused by the RA, difficult to tell apart really! According to the MTX guidelines, side effects from the drug are normally restricted to the 24 hour period after medicating. So if the 'tiredness' is lasting longer it may require investigation. Try changing your pattern by splitting the MTX dose into 2 or 3 lots over the 24 hour period. May make all the difference and definitely worth a try! Lyn x

Hi Lyn,
Thanks for your concern, It is the Methotrexate as it is only Sunday later on I feel tired, and I bounce back Monday and make up for what I didn't do Sunday. I'm sending you a big hug, I read your story on another page. It has hit us all in very similar ways, its a pity they cant illuminate the gene which causes it. I take 6 and I have split the dose a few hours apart, I hate taking the 6 on a Saturday, but its a small price to pay for keeping well. Hope to meet up with you and everyone soon. Love Lorna xx

Hi Lorna My reply was aimed more at anyone with longer term nausea, as mentioned in a previous post, I appreciate that side-effects from Mtx usually last only 24 hours or so, thank goodness! Been taking the stuff for the best part of 10 years, yuk - hate it!! I have a son who is desperate to become a medic and find the "rogue gene", if it exists! He's nearly 16 so not too long to wait and he's already working on it!! Look forward to meeting you too, hopefully soon! Lyn x PS I love hugs, thank you
